CT Scanning

What’s a CT Scan, and Why Might My Pet Need One?

A CT scan (short for “computed tomography”) is a special kind of imaging that allows us to see inside your pet’s body in three dimensions. It gives us a much clearer picture than traditional X-rays, especially for:

  • Detecting tumors or growths
  • Evaluating head, spine, and joint issues
  • Identifying internal injuries after trauma
  • Checking for dental or jaw problems, especially in rabbits, guinea pigs, and other exotic pets
  • Diagnosing neurological conditions like back pain or balance issues
  • Examining blood vessels for abnormalities- CT can be used to evaluate blood vessels for abnormalities, typically in consultation with a radiologist at the time of imaging. When contrast is used, precise coordination is required—taking into account the patient’s filtration rate, scan speed, and slice thickness—to ensure accurate and safe results.

It’s often recommended when an X-ray or ultrasound can’t give us enough detail—or when we need answers fast.

How Is a CT Scan Done?

With our OmniTom® Elite scanner, CT scans are performed in a specialized imaging room ensuring a controlled environment for optimal image quality and safety. Your pet is gently sedated to keep them still and comfortable during the quick scan, and our trained team monitors them the entire time.

The scanner rotates around your pet, taking images from many angles. Then, it builds a full 3D picture of the area we’re checking—whether it’s their brain, spine, lungs, or even teeth.

Why Choose CT Scanning at Parkway?

Here’s what makes our CT scan service different—and better:

  • Faster Results –Because imaging is done right here at our hospital, there’s no delay in getting answers. CT scans are reviewed by board-certified radiologists, with results typically available within 24 to 72 hours—so we can begin the right treatment as soon as possible.
  • Perfect for Exotic Pets, Too – CT scanning is considered the gold standard for advanced imaging in exotic species, often providing far greater detail and diagnostic value than traditional radiographs.

Is a CT Scan Right for My Pet?

We’re here to help you make the best decision for your furry, feathered, or scaly friend. If your pet is facing a condition that’s difficult to diagnose, not responding to treatment, or requires surgical planning, a CT scan may be the next best step toward answers and effective care.
